North Macedonia

Country Profile

North Macedonia is a parliamentary democracy with a population of 2.1 million. Since declaring independence in 1991, the country has set about establishing a market economy and plotting a course to membership of the European Union.

Social entrepreneurship in North Macedonia has entered the public life debate in the last decade. The research on this field is contemporary and mostly tackles legal issues and factors for development of the field. Social entrepreneurship is a part of the economy that is neither privately nor publicly controlled.

The size and scale of the sector are not yet determined and mapped conclusively. The various legal forms that social enterprises adopt among different states across the continents make it difficult for researchers to provide conclusive data, which makes national and international comparisons unreliable at the moment.
